ad-diction
"The logic of desire is illogical. Enough is never enough and more never satisfies. The technologies of electronic reproduction instill desires that can never be satisfied. Though no one needs to upgrade, everyone wants to do so. The image is the hallucinatory production of perception. Images are addictive; once hooked, it is hard to kick the habit. The ad-dict buys images not things. Hallucinogenic drugs...electronics...all-at-onceness...all-at-oneness. Fibers link these disparate points. Virtual reality is the LSD of the electronic age." From Imagologies Esa Saarinen and Mark C. Taylor 1994

well now..speaking as someone who just upgaded I would say there are some times one needs to upgrade..speaking of need in very broad terms of course! Ha! However, I think I do agree with the core of this quote. Our society has become increasingly materialistic... unaware of what real NEED even is and we ( the big "I" is implied here of course) are too often dissatisfied with all we DO have. I saw more true joy and peace in rural Danda, Haiti...where no one had anything... really... than I do most days around me in the Valley or in myself. That is sobering and scary.
